Mandarin Alley
Kapalai Island · Malaysia
A shallow rubble and coral-head channel running beneath the stilts of Kapalai resort becomes one of Southeast Asia's most reliable mandarin dragonet stages at dusk, when males in iridescent psychedelic livery court females in brief but electrifying displays. The site is extremely shallow — rarely exceeding 6 metres — making it a perfect evening shore dive from the resort jetty with long bottom times and no decompression concerns. Patient divers who settle quietly among the rubble are rewarded with spawning ascents occurring every few minutes as the light fades.
