Dusky grouper are protogynous hermaphrodites: all individuals begin life as females and the largest, dominant individuals transition to male. They are a keystone predator on Mediterranean reefs, controlling populations of wrasse, damselfish, and octopus. Decades of spearfishing pressure pushed them to near extinction in many areas; Kaş marine protected areas have helped local populations recover noticeably since 2010.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
