Underwater at Big Fish Country

Big Fish Country

Dive site

Big Fish Country is exactly what its name promises — a series of reef structures at the northern tip of New Ireland where the St George's Channel meets open ocean and delivers a constant conveyor belt of pelagic life. Spinner dolphins are regularly encountered on the surface approach to the site, and the dives themselves produce silvertip sharks at depth, schooling hammerheads during the June to September season, dogtooth tuna exploding through baitfish aggregations, and the occasional whale shark on the surface. The reef structure itself is healthy and serves as a substrate for enormous sea fans and black coral trees, but the real draw here is the unpredictable, exhilarating large animal action that defines diving at the edge of the Pacific.
