Green sea turtles are among the most reliable sightings at Aka, where a protected breeding population has habituated to diver presence over decades of conservation. Adults graze on seagrass beds in the sandy channels between coral terraces and regularly rest beneath large table coral overhangs. The Kerama population is one of the healthiest in Japan, with tagging studies showing strong site fidelity and successful nesting on Aka's beaches every summer.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
