Giant trevally use the Tokashiki wall as an ambush corridor, launching high-speed attacks from depth into the fusilier schools that hover above the reef crest in the current. Individuals exceeding one metre are common here, a size class that has disappeared from many fished reefs throughout the region. Their presence in large numbers is a reliable indicator of the prey fish biomass sustained by the Kuroshio Current nutrients washing across the wall face.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
