Overview
Ex Royal Thai Navy infantry landing craft scuttled in June 2011 about 800 metres southwest of Koh Tao as a wreck specialty training site. The Sattakut sits upright on a sandy plain with the seabed at 30 metres and the deck around 18 to 22 metres. The bow and stern gun mounts remain in place and are the signature photo subjects, drawing schools of yellowtail fusiliers and snapper that hover in the lee of the railings. Penetration of the wheelhouse and cargo holds is possible for divers with wreck training; the engine room is reserved for more experienced wreck divers carrying lights. Originally USS LCI(L) 742, the ship served at Iwo Jima before its 1947 transfer to the Royal Thai Navy and 2011 sinking.
Briefing note
Use the mooring buoys; the wreck sits on sand and is easy to lose in poorer visibility. Wreck specialty certification is required for penetration of the wheelhouse and cargo holds. The deeper engine room and crew quarters need a torch and are typically reserved for divers with technical or advanced wreck training. The site is often combined with Hin Pee Wee pinnacle 30 metres to the northwest as a multi level dive. Visibility drops sharply during the November monsoon when many operators skip the site.
