Silvertip Snapper

Lutjanus argentimaculatus

Sighting evidence at Blue Hole, Kosrae

Dense aggregations of silvertip snapper pack the chimney section of the Blue Hole, hanging in the water column and filtering the current that funnels through the narrow passage. The interplay of their silver flanks with filtered blue light from above creates one of Kosrae's most photographed underwater tableaux. These aggregations are a reliable feature of the dive regardless of season, as the structure provides shelter and the current delivers a continuous food supply.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
