El Mogote Whale Shark Channel
La Paz / Sea of Cortez · Mexico
The shallow sandy channel between El Mogote peninsula and La Paz itself becomes one of the most reliable whale shark aggregation sites on the planet from November through April. Plankton blooms draw juvenile whale sharks in concentrations rarely seen anywhere else — on good days, 20 or more individuals feed within a few hundred meters of each other. Snorkeling is the standard approach given the 3 to 8 meter depths, though scuba divers can find the sharks in deeper water nearby. Hammerhead sharks, silky sharks, and manta rays also visit the channel during the warmer months. The site is protected under Mexican law prohibiting touching or approaching within two meters.
