Fang Ming Wreck
La Paz / Sea of Cortez · Mexico
The Fang Ming is a 58-meter Chinese cargo ship seized by Mexican authorities for carrying illegal immigrants and deliberately sunk in 1999 to create an artificial reef. She sits upright on a sandy bottom at 17 meters, largely intact, with open holds and a wheelhouse accessible to recreational divers. The wreck is now densely encrusted with corals, sponges, and tunicates. Schools of Panamic porkfish shelter in the holds, bullseye electric rays rest on the sandy bottom nearby, and the mast at 8 meters makes for excellent safety stop photography. Visibility in the protected bay is typically excellent.
