Los Islotes Sea Lion Colony
La Paz / Sea of Cortez · Mexico
A pair of rocky outcrops at the northern tip of Espiritu Santo Island host the largest sea lion colony in the Sea of Cortez. Juveniles barrel into the water the moment divers descend, blowing bubbles in your mask and spiraling around in tight corkscrews. The rocky reef drops to 20 meters with crevices holding moray eels, giant hawkfish, and Panamic sergeant majors. Hammerhead sharks occasionally cruise through at depth from June to October. The energy of interacting with 500-plus wild sea lions in their home territory is unlike anything else in Mexican waters.
