Shark Fin Rock
Lanai · United States
A dramatic basalt pinnacle rising from 30 metres to just below the surface on Lanai's north coast, Shark Fin Rock looks from above exactly like a dorsal fin cutting through the water. The site is exposed to stronger current than the cathedral sites but rewards advanced divers with schooling hammerhead sharks and massive ulua (giant trevally) hunting in the blue water around the pinnacle. The pinnacle walls are carpeted in encrusting sponges and black coral from 15 metres down, and the strong current delivers the nutrient-rich water that sustains exceptional pelagic diversity.
