Painted frogfish cling motionless to the wreck's sponge-encrusted surfaces, their lumpy skin texture and colour-matching ability making them nearly invisible until they lunge at passing prey. They are ambush specialists whose strike is one of the fastest feeding movements in the vertebrate world, lasting under six milliseconds. The nutrient-rich microhabitat of a coral-encrusted wreck provides ideal conditions for this species.

Frogfish is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
