Schools of up to 30 bumphead parrotfish graze the outer coral bommies in the early morning, their distinctive forehead knocking audible as they bite live coral. As one of the largest herbivorous fish on the reef, they play a critical role in controlling algae and generating the fine white sand that defines Lankayan's seafloor. Their presence signals a healthy, low-fishing-pressure ecosystem.
