Reef whitetips rest in loose groups on the sand beneath coral ledges during the day, becoming active hunters of reef fish and octopus at dusk. They are highly site-faithful and the same individuals can be recognised across multiple dives by fin notches and markings. Their relaxed behaviour around divers makes Lankayan's cleaning station an ideal location for close-range observation.
