Los Jameos del Agua Reef
Lanzarote · Spain
A volcanic lava reef extending from the famous Jameos del Agua cave complex into the Atlantic. Lava tubes collapsed long ago to create a spine of broken basalt arches at 10 to 22 m, now carpeted in yellow and orange encrusting sponge. Moray eels occupy every overhang; stingrays rest motionless in sandy patches between lava fingers. Upwelling nutrients from the Canary Current draw barracuda and amberjack through in feeding pulses during autumn and winter months.
