Museo Atlantico
Lanzarote · Spain
The world's first underwater sculpture museum, opened in 2016 and designed by Jason deCaires Taylor. Over 300 life-size concrete figures are arranged in 12 installations across a sandy seabed at 12 to 15 m, deliberately colonised by coral, sponge, and sea urchin. The figures depict refugees, a ring of children facing smartphones, and a boat of migrants that has acquired a living reef veneer. Strong natural light filters from above in the morning; visibility routinely exceeds 20 m. Accessible to beginner divers from the nearby harbour.
