Cueva de los Verdes Lava Tube
Dive site
The Cueva de los Verdes lava tube system formed approximately 3 000 years ago during eruptions of the Corona volcano and extends 1.5 km into the Atlantic as the Jameos del Agua tunnel system. The subaqueous section accessible to divers drops through a lava ceiling collapse into a cathedral-shaped tube at 6 to 20 m, where basalt formations — ropy pahoehoe textures, lava stalactites, and collapsed tube sections — are preserved in extraordinary detail. Bioluminescent plankton illuminate the darker passages after dusk. This is one of the few sites worldwide where geology-focused cave diving intersects with open-water reef species in the same dive.
