Trumpetfish station themselves vertically alongside black corals and gorgonian fans on the crater wall, adopting the same posture as the surrounding hydroid or sponge stalks. This cryptic posture is maintained for extended periods — individuals have been observed motionless against the same fan coral for over 20 minutes, waiting for damselfish or wrasse to approach within striking range.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
