Lakeba Wall
Lau Group · Fiji
Lakeba is the administrative capital of Lau Province and the largest island in the southern Lau Group, its windward coast dropping away in a sheer wall that plunges beyond recreational limits. The wall face is carpeted with black coral trees from 20 metres down and gorgonians extend horizontally into the current. Passing pelagics include wahoo and large dogtooth tuna tracking the wall edge while resident hawksbill turtles graze on sponge growth in the 15 to 25 metre zone. The wall top is a pristine hard coral garden with table corals exceeding two metres diameter, evidence of a reef with decades of negligible fishing pressure.
