Moce Bommies
Lau Group · Fiji
Moce Island's sheltered western lagoon is scattered with isolated coral bommies rising from a 15 metre sand floor, each one a self-contained ecosystem teeming with soft coral polyps and the fish communities that depend on them. Mandarin fish are present at dusk on several of the rubble-based bommies and are accessible to patient photographers who arrive at last light. The macro life density is exceptional by any Fijian standard — nudibranchs of 30 or more species have been recorded at this single location including several undescribed Chromodoris variants — and the absence of dive boat traffic means subjects are undisturbed and easy to approach.
