Oneata Passage
Lau Group · Fiji
Oneata Passage channels the South Equatorial Current between Oneata and Moce islands, funnelling nutrient-rich blue water across a hard coral ridge that plunges to 50 metres on the outer slope. Grey reef sharks are resident in numbers rarely seen in more frequented Fijian waters, and schooling bigeye trevally form dense bait balls in the current shadow downstream of the reef crest. The coral coverage on the upper ridge is largely intact — staghorn acropora tables extend to the horizon in the shallows, undisturbed by anchor damage or crown-of-thorns pressure. Access is by liveaboard only and the site is dived rarely, typically just a handful of times per year.
