Underwater at Batroun Roman Wreck

Batroun Roman Wreck

Dive site

A Roman-era trading vessel lies in a natural bay north of Batroun in just 14 to 18 metres, its cargo of amphoras still stacked in the original load pattern. The wreck rests on a sandy bottom between two rocky ridges, and the surrounding reef has colonised the structure with gorgonian fans, encrusting sponges, and colonies of date mussels. Moray eels thread through the amphora stack; scorpionfish are virtually invisible against the hull encrustation. One of the most accessible ancient wrecks in the eastern Mediterranean.
