Underwater at Byblos Phoenician Anchorage

Byblos Phoenician Anchorage

Dive site

The seafloor off ancient Byblos holds the silhouettes of Phoenician trading vessels that sank in one of the world's oldest continuously occupied ports. Amphora fragments, stone anchors, and encrusted timber framing emerge from soft sediment at 12 to 22 metres. Octopus colonise every hollow; large grouper patrol the debris field perimeter. The site is historically protected so nothing may be touched, but the density of artefacts is startling even by Mediterranean standards.
