Underwater at Cape Sigri Reef

Cape Sigri Reef

Dive site

The westernmost point of Lesbos at Cape Sigri faces open water, and the reef that extends from the cape tip into the Aegean is swept by seasonal north winds that deliver cooler, nutrient-rich water in summer. The reef crest at 8 metres gives way to a stepped wall at 18 and then 30 metres, each step colonised by different sponge and gorgonian communities. Mediterranean moray eels occupy the deeper ledges while large dusky grouper patrol the reef top. The cape's exposure means this site is dived only in calm weather — the payoff is among the best visibility on Lesbos at 20 to 25 metres and consistently larger fish than in the sheltered bays.
