Underwater at Mytilene Posidonia Meadows

Mytilene Posidonia Meadows

Dive site

South of Mytilene harbour, Neptune grass (Posidonia oceanica) meadows extend from 5 to 22 metres in dense carpets, providing critical nursery habitat for juvenile sea bream, mullet, and syngnathid fishes. The meadows are exceptionally dense and healthy by Aegean standards, partly because the bay's fishing pressure has been managed by local tradition. Loggerhead turtles visit throughout summer to rest in the posidonia, and divers frequently observe them grazing or sleeping on the matte. Large common stingray bury themselves at the meadow edges at dusk. The site is suited to all levels and provides a baseline for understanding Eastern Aegean posidonia ecosystem health.
