Underwater at Limnos Lava Tubes

Limnos Lava Tubes

Dive site

South of Myrina harbour, collapsed lava tube formations create a maze of swim-through arches and short tunnels at 12 to 22 metres, with natural skylights where the tube ceilings have fractured. The interior surfaces host Parazoanthus axinellae yellow encrusting zoanthids and colonies of Pentapora fascialis rose coral — species characteristic of low-light Mediterranean cave environments. Slipper lobster (Scyllarides latus) use the tube floors as daytime refuges and are commonly sighted in numbers unusual for accessible Aegean reefs. The dive requires no penetration skills — all passages are open at both ends — but a torch improves colour appreciation inside the tubes.
