Limnos Volcanic Reef
Dive site
Limnos sits on a volcanic arc, and its seafloor reflects this origin in dramatic basalt columns and lava tube formations that descend in broken steps from 5 to 30 metres. Visible gas seeps at 18 to 22 metres — CO2 bubbling from fissures — create localised low-pH micro-environments that have attracted scientific interest as natural ocean acidification analogues. The volcanic rock substrate hosts a different sponge community to carbonate reefs, with yellow tube sponges and encrusting cup corals (Caryophyllia spp.) dominant. Dense sea urchin populations maintain algal clearings between the basalt columns. Visibility is excellent year-round due to the island's position in an area of strong tidal mixing at 18 to 22 metres.
