Thassos Crystal Bay

Thassos earns its reputation as the clearest-water island in the northern Aegean from its marble bedrock geology — the same white marble quarried since antiquity creates a pale, reflective substrate that amplifies ambient light and renders visibility at 25 to 30 metres a reliable summer occurrence. Crystal Bay on the island's northwestern coast concentrates this effect in a sheltered semicircle of marble boulders, posidonia meadows, and sand flats. Juvenile grouper, large schools of salema (Sarpa salpa) grazing on posidonia, and octopus in the boulder field make this both a stunning visual dive and a productive marine life encounter. Best dived mid-morning when the light angle penetrates fully into the crystal water column.
