Underwater at Thassos Marble Wall

Thassos Marble Wall

Dive site

Northern Thassos presents a wall of white and grey marble that plunges from 2 metres at the surface to a sandy bottom at 28 metres — a geological spectacle unique among Aegean dive sites. The marble face is smooth at depth but fractured in the upper 10 metres by freshwater infiltration fissures that create vertical channels colonised by sponges and gorgonians. The clarity of the water here reaches 30 metres on calm days, allowing divers to see the full wall extent in a single view. Large dentex (Dentex dentex) patrol the wall base, and the mix of white marble and blue water creates a visual starkness that underwater photographers find exceptional. Best in July and August when northerly winds are calm and visibility is at its peak.
