Slipper Lobster

Parribacus antarcticus

Sighting evidence at Beauty Cave, Little Liuqiu Island

Slipper lobsters occupy the shaded undersides of boulders and cave ledges throughout the site, identifiable by their flattened antennae plates and boxy armored body. They are largely nocturnal but can be found resting in the same locations on successive dives, making them a reliable macro subject for underwater photographers. Their unusual flattened body plan is an evolutionary adaptation for wedging into narrow rock crevices beyond the reach of larger predators.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
