Lemon sharks are inshore reef sharks with a distinctive yellowish-brown colouration and a second dorsal fin nearly as large as the first. At Shark Reef they are resident rather than merely attracted by feeding operations, using the plateau as a resting and socialising area throughout the year. Long-term study of lemon shark social behaviour has revealed that they maintain persistent social networks with other individuals, a form of sociality rare among sharks. The Bahamas is one of their global strongholds.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
