Galapagos sharks are the dominant pelagic predator at Ball's Pyramid, circling the exposed sea stack in groups of up to 30 and capitalising on the large baitfish populations that aggregate around the pinnacle's upwelling currents. They are an oceanic species rarely seen at mainland dive sites, and Ball's Pyramid's complete isolation from human disturbance means they display entirely natural, uninhabited behaviour toward divers.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
