Bigeye

Priacanthus hamrur

Sighting evidence at Erscotts Hole, Lord Howe Island

Crescent-tail bigeyes pack the cave chambers of Erscotts Hole in dense, shimmering schools, their large eyes adapted for the low-light conditions of cavern environments where they spend daylight hours resting before dispersing to feed on zooplankton at night. Their ruby-red coloration, which appears grey-pink in the cave's filtered light, is a deep-water adaptation that makes them cryptic to predators in dark environments.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
