Lord Howe Coralfish

Amphichaetodon howensis

Sighting evidence at Erscotts Hole, Lord Howe Island

The Lord Howe coralfish is a butterflyfish endemic found only at Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island, and Erscotts Hole's sheltered interior represents some of the most reliable habitat for observing this species. It feeds on coral polyps and small crustaceans along the cave's entrance zones where light still penetrates, and its restriction to these two remote Tasman Sea island groups makes every sighting genuinely significant.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
