Giant trevally circulate Malabar Pinnacle in loose groups, using the upwelling currents created by the seamount's topography to intercept schools of mackerel and small tuna. At Lord Howe Island they reach exceptionally large sizes given the absence of recreational fishing pressure in the marine park, and experienced divers occasionally witness cooperative hunting behaviour where individuals herd prey against the pinnacle's vertical walls.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
