Scalloped hammerheads congregate along Carmen Island's wall in schools of 20 to 100+ individuals between July and November, circling in the blue water at 20 to 35 m in a behaviour linked to navigation and social bonding rather than feeding. The schools are most dense during early morning dives before boat traffic increases, and patient divers who remain still against the wall are rewarded with passes as close as 5 m. Carmen Island is considered one of the most reliable hammerhead schooling sites in the Gulf of California's central section.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
