Whitetip reef sharks rest in clusters of 3 to 8 individuals on the deeper ledges of Carmen's wall at 20 to 30 m, their pale undersides resting against the rock in a complete metabolic resting state that makes close approach possible. At dusk they become active cooperative hunters, pursuing fish into crevices along the wall face in what researchers describe as one of the most organised predatory strategies of any shark species. Night dives on the wall during an active hunt are among the most dramatic marine wildlife spectacles in the Sea of Cortez.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
