The Coronado colony is among the most interactive sea lion aggregations in the world, with juveniles actively soliciting play from divers — blowing bubble rings, stealing fins, and barrel-rolling within arm's reach. Adult bulls establish territories on the haul-out rocks but rarely approach divers, leaving the underwater theatre almost entirely to playful juveniles and adolescent females. Encounters are richest in the early morning before the sea lions head offshore to feed, typically between 08:00 and 10:00.

California Sea Lion is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
