California morays are endemic to the northeastern Pacific and reach up to 1.5 m, inhabiting Coronado's rocky crevices from the shallows down to 25 m. They are among the few moray species that occasionally hunt cooperatively with roving grouper, with the grouper pointing toward a crevice and the moray flushing prey out into the open. Cleaning stations near the island's base attract multiple individuals simultaneously, creating reliable, close-range photographic opportunities.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
