Cortez Electric Ray

Narcine entemedor

Sighting evidence at Los Candeleros, Loreto

The Cortez electric ray — a small, disc-shaped species capable of discharging up to 37 volts — rests partially buried in the sandy patches between the pinnacles at Los Candeleros, often completely invisible until disturbed. They are endemic to the eastern Pacific and reach about 60 cm in diameter, making them easy to overlook and accidentally disturb during sandy-bottom finning. Careful divers who scan the substrate can spot their distinctive double-lobed disc outline and the faint ripple of their locomotory disc as they breathe.
