Underwater at Dos Mosquises Seamount

Dos Mosquises Seamount

Los Roques · Venezuela

South of the main Los Roques atoll, a submerged seamount rising from 50 m to within 18 m of the surface marks the site of what local operators consider the most reliably spectacular large-pelagic encounter in Venezuelan waters. The seamount acts as a navigation landmark for pelagic species crossing between the Venezuelan coast and the open Atlantic, and schooling hammerhead sharks — though not present year-round — aggregate here from November through February in groups of 10 to 40 individuals. Outside of the hammerhead season, great hammerhead and bull sharks are resident around the summit, along with manta rays that use the seamount's current shadows to feed on concentrated zooplankton. The Fundación Científica Los Roques operates a turtle research station on nearby Dos Mosquises island, and divers here are participating in one of the few genuinely pristine large-animal marine environments remaining in the Caribbean.
