Noronqui Wall
Los Roques · Venezuela
On the northeastern outer edge of the Los Roques atoll, the Noronqui Wall plunges from a wave-washed reef crest at 3 m to a sheer vertical face that drops beyond recreational limits at 50 m, draped in some of the most pristine black coral forests in the southern Caribbean. The wall's remoteness has spared it from anchor damage and heavy diver traffic, and the coral communities here — including large stands of mountainous star coral and towering pillar coral — show none of the bleaching fragmentation visible at more-visited Caribbean sites. Loggerhead turtles are common along the wall's upper third, resting on broad ledges or grazing on sponge growth, and the blue water off the wall regularly produces large schools of horse-eye jacks and Atlantic spadefish that circle in columns above the reef edge.
