Underwater at Sarqui Nursery Ground

Sarqui Nursery Ground

Los Roques · Venezuela

The seagrass meadows and patch reefs around Sarqui cay serve as one of the primary nursery and feeding grounds for juvenile marine life within the Los Roques National Park, and the shallow diving here — maximum 12 m — belies the extraordinary density and diversity of species using this habitat. Juvenile loggerhead and hawksbill turtles graze on seagrass and sponges in water so clear that snorkelers and divers alike can observe their feeding behavior undisturbed. The patch reef islands within the meadow host enormous southern stingrays that bury themselves in the sand between feeding sorties, and at night the site transforms completely as Caribbean reef octopus emerge to hunt across the seagrass and bioluminescent plankton light up the shallows. Nurse sharks are resident and predictably encountered resting under the patch reef overhangs during daylight hours.
