Princess Parrotfish

Scarus taeniopterus

Sighting evidence at Isla Los Testigos Reef, Los Testigos

Princess parrotfish are abundant across the reef terrace, grazing on algae-encrusted coral rubble and producing the white sand that forms Los Testigos's beaches. Their populations are unusually dense compared to fished Caribbean reefs, reflecting the near-total absence of human exploitation at this remote site. Supermale individuals in vivid green and pink terminal phase are particularly conspicuous on the shallow reef flat.
