B-25 Bomber Wreck

Madang · Papua New Guinea

A WWII-era North American B-25 Mitchell bomber rests in Madang Lagoon, its twin engines, propellers and airframe remarkably intact given the decades of submersion. The aircraft lies on a sandy slope with the cockpit at around 14 metres and the tail at 20 metres, allowing extended bottom time even for recreational divers. Coral growth now covers much of the aluminium structure, and the undercarriage provides shelter for a cleaning station visited by wrasse and small sharks. Aviation history and reef biology combine here in a way that is uniquely Madang.
