Robust Ghost Pipefish

Solenostomus cyanopterus

Sighting evidence at Eel Garden, Madang

Robust ghost pipefish hover head-down in pairs among seagrass and algae, their mottled brown and green coloration so convincing as vegetative debris that only movement betrays their presence. They feed by sucking small crustaceans into their tubular snouts with a rapid vacuum strike, and their pair-bonding behavior — where male and female maintain proximity for extended periods — is exceptionally rare among fish and appears to increase reproductive success in the patchy habitats of the Madang slope.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
