Red scorpionfish are the permanent gatekeepers of Caverna dos Peixes, occupying ledges and rubble piles at the cave entrance and shallow interior where their mottled red, orange, and brown pattern renders them essentially invisible against sponge-encrusted basalt. As ambush predators they sit motionless for hours, relying entirely on camouflage and a burst-strike mechanism capable of engulfing prey in under 15 milliseconds, and they only relocate when physically nudged — a habituation to divers that makes extended observation possible. Their venomous dorsal spines remain erect when at rest, serving as passive defence against larger predators including moray eels and groupers that share the cave system.
