Barracuda at Garajau form loose aggregations of 20 to 80 individuals that patrol the mid-water column between 10 and 25 metres, their mirrored flanks catching sunlight in coordinated spirals as they herd sardines and small wrasse against the reef wall. As apex ambush predators, they exert top-down control on the resident bait-fish populations that in turn keep plankton-feeding invertebrate communities in balance. Their year-round residence at Garajau is a direct consequence of the reserve's protection — commercial fishing pressure outside the boundary has substantially reduced barracuda numbers across the rest of Madeira's coastline.

Great Barracuda is listed as a curated species here based on historical reports.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
