Overview
A 122 m German cargo ship scuttled by her own crew on 10 May 1940 to avoid Dutch capture after Germany invaded the Netherlands. The hull lies on its port side off Malmok Bay with the top deck at 5 m and the seabed at 18 m, broken amidships by decades of storms. Tube sponges, soft coral, and orange cup coral encrust the steel; hawksbill turtles, green morays, blue tang, and lobsters work the holds. Snorkelers reach the upper rails while divers swim the cargo bays and crew quarters.
Briefing note
Storm damage has continued to break up the hull since 1953; some operators no longer allow penetration. Surface conditions can get choppy when the trade winds pick up in winter.
