Emperor shrimp on nudibranch

Periclimenes imperator

Sighting evidence at Manado Tua Volcano Slope

Emperor shrimp are commensal crustaceans that hitchhike on nudibranchs, sea cucumbers, and Spanish dancers. They feed on the microorganisms disturbed by their host's movement and are small enough — under 2 cm — that they are invisible without deliberate searching. Manado Tua's rubble zones host abundant nudibranch populations that serve as emperor shrimp hosts, making this one of the better sites in North Sulawesi for the combination encounter.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
